By: Erin Moore for Body1Pharmaceutical leader Merck has announced the recall of the Haemophilus influenza type b, or the “Hib,” vaccine. Last month, shipments were halted due to production quality testing – and as a result, Merck is recalling certain lots of the drug as a precaution. Testing revealed that contamination may have occurred and although Merck says the possibility is low, they cannot guarantee that the vaccines are sterile. The Hib vaccine is generally administered to babies and young children in order to prevent meningitis, pneumonia, and several other serious infections.
Ten lots of PedvaxHIB® ((Haemophilus b Conjugate Vaccine (Meningococcal Protein Conjugate)) and two lots of COMVAX® ((Haemophilus b Conjugate (Meningococcal Protein Conjugate) and Hepatitis B (Recombinant) Vaccine)) are being recalled. These doses of the Hib vaccine were given to patients in the United States starting in April of this year. If you are concerned about being affected, call your physician.
