    Top Model Has Asperger’s

    December 04, 2007

    By: Erin Moore for Body1

Asperger’s syndrome is a rare disorder that doesn’t often get press. However, America’s Next Top Model’s Heather Kuzmich has brought a famous, pretty face to the name. The 21-year-old tried out for the Tyra Banks-hosted reality show to prove to herself that her disability doesn’t have to run her life. Asperger’s is marked by social awkwardness and the inability to gauge cues in social situations. Most people have average or above average intelligence, but have a hard time focusing and making friends.

Kuzmich has been the target of the other model’s jokes, yet in viewer polls has been one of the most popular contestants ever on the show. She has also received high praise from Banks and other judges for her modeling ability and beauty. Her presence on America’s Next Top Model has brought awareness of an issue and a depth to a show not characterized by it before.
