By: Erin Moore for Body1The “Master Cleanse Diet” is a hot topic right now, and the controversy is heating up as does the buzz. Also called the Lemonade Diet or the Master Cleanser Diet, it is based on a mixture of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup, and water – and no solid food. The diet was created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941 and became known through Peter Glickman’s recent book, "Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days." It was further popularized when singer and actress Beyonce Knowles told Oprah she used the plan to lose 20 pounds quickly for a movie role.
Critics say these ingredients do not promote healthy weight loss, and point to the lack of vitamins and minerals. Some women say the diet worked for them, while many others say they tried the diet and felt fatigued, lifeless, emotional, and body-obsessed. Never restrict your diet without first talking to your doctor.
