By: Erin Moore for Body1Scientists at Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in New York say they have created a drug that delays aging. The new molecule contains the equivalent of 1,000 times the amount of the ingredient in red wine thought to boost longevity and protect against age-related disease. Called resveratrol, this compound was discovered in 2003 by a post-doctoral student at MIT.
Mice and rats responded to the new drug with lower blood-sugar levels and more powerful mitochondria, which are the power centers of cells that provide energy. As you age, the amount and strength of these organelles tend to diminish. Researchers say cycling great Lance Armstrong has more mitochondria than the average person, allowing him special endurance capabilities. Sirtris’ drug will be tested in clinical trials starting next year.
