    Young Life Lost at SCCC

    November 13, 2007

    By: Erin Moore for Body1

A student at Sullivan County Community College in New York died Thursday after collapsing in a dorm room. Robert A. Bastian, 17, a freshman studying computer information systems, was playing video games with friends when he collapsed around 2 a.m. Friends called 911 while an officer on duty performed CPR. The EMTs who arrived were unable to resuscitate him. Records show that complications from an enlarged heart are what triggered his death.

Described as a “good kid” who didn’t smoke or drink, Bastian was popular among students. Three hundred of his friends and acquaintances gathered together for a counseling session later on Thursday. They reportedly asked why all advisors and officers are not trained in CPR. Dorms at the school are not equipped with automated external defibrillators, something students have said that they would like to see change.
