    Vioxx Settlement Reached

    November 09, 2007

    By: Erin Moore for Body1

Merck announced today that it had reached a settlement over Vioxx, their pain reliever medication that was pulled from the market amid safety concerns three years ago. The total amount is 4.85 billion and it settles 27,000 lawsuits by people who say they or their family members had adverse effects or died due to the drug. More than 20 civil trials over the last two years have been settled, and Merck negotiated with most plaintiffs to reach settlements.

Data showed the arthritis drug and painkiller increased heart risk.
