By: Erin Moore for Body1Continuing the pattern of recent food and product recalls, the Chinese-made Aqua Dots toy was recalled by its Australian manufacturer Wednesday. Moose Enterprises of Melbourne, Australia released a statement saying they believe one of their Chinese factories substituted a toxic chemical for the glue that is usually used. This chemical can act like the “date-rape drug” gamma hydroxy butyrate when ingested, causing seizure, coma, and death. While two children have experienced some of these symptoms and recovered, no deaths have been reported.
According to Wal-Mart, Aqua Dots have been one of the most popular toys and were expected to be a top seller this holiday season. They are not the only Chinese product that has been recalled in recent months; a toothpaste containing anti-freeze was taken off the market this summer.
Child safety is obviously an important issue, so research products before purchasing when possible.
