    Oral Contraceptives and Heart Risk

    November 07, 2007

    By: Erin Moore for Body1

Controversial study results out of Belgium are saying that birth control pills may cause artery-clogging plaques to form, endangering the heart. Researchers presented their findings to an American Heart Association meeting in Orlando, Fla. Tuesday. Prior studies on the topic of heart disease and oral contraceptives have been inconclusive, some even indicating that they are protective to women’s hearts. This study showed a significant increase in heart risk for women between the ages of 33 and 55 who had been taking the pill, especially for 10 or more years. Skeptics point out that these women were taking pills with higher concentrations of estrogen than are common nowadays. Both sides agree results need to be replicated.

Birth control pills are the world’s most common contraceptive; about 12 million American women take them. Talk to your doctor if you are considering the pill or have any concerns about your use of them.
