By: Erin Moore for Body1Halloween is an annual tradition that allows children and adults alike to delight in sweets, treats, and fun gatherings. Halloween’s origins date back to Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of the summer harvest and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on October 31, the last day of summer, the ghosts of the dead returned and that the worlds of the living and the dead merged. They wore costumes and told each other’s fortunes to celebrate.
Nowadays, many children parade through the streets in costumes hoping for a treat, and threaten a trick if their wish isn’t granted. Allowing your kids to indulge is fine, but teach them moderation during the rest of the year. Encourage games, sports, and physical activity. Most important, do these things yourself since children will model themselves after you.
