By: Erin Moore for Body1Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts has been fighting breast cancer very publically, sharing her experiences in a blog and continuing to work. She sat down with ABC’s Melanie Lawson Thursday to talk about what it’s been like.
With no history of breast cancer in her family, Roberts found a lump one day and went for a mammogram, which revealed nothing. A subsequent ultrasound did show cancer, and Roberts urges women – especially young women – to ask for one if in doubt. She also reminds women to do a monthly breast self-exam.
Refusing to take her diagnosis lying down, Roberts has continued to host GMA with Diane Sawyer, who is a good friend, and travel to places such as the Middle East to cover breast cancer and other news. Now three months into treatment, she has had surgery and has started with chemotherapy. "I know that people are going through this and don't have a support system, but we want to be their support system," she said.
