By: Erin Moore at Body1Some of the most popular and widely used lipstick brands in the United States tested positive for lead, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics said Thursday. Just under two-thirds of the brands tested contained lead, and one-third exceeded the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) safe level of lead for candy. Even though lipstick is ingested, especially with frequent application every day, there are minimal testing and ingredient requirements for it and other personal care products. Tested brands included L’Oreal, Maybelline, CoverGirl, and Dior. Some of the types of lipstick that tested highest in lead, which can cause miscarriage and behavioral problems in children, among other effects, are: L'Oréal Colour Riche "True Red," L'Oréal Colour Riche "Classic Wine," Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor "Maximum Red" and Dior Addict "Positive Red." It is important to note, however, that the study was only conducted on red lipstick. Lipsticks tested were bought in Boston, Hartford, Conn., San Francisco and Minneapolis, and were randomly selected.
L’Oreal released a statement Friday saying they are committed to upholding the highest level of safety standards, but CoverGirl and Dior were not reached for comment.
