    Big Baby

    September 27, 2007

    By: Erin Moore for Body1

One of the largest babies ever born was delivered September 17th, a nurse from the small clinic of Aleisk, Siberia told reporters Thursday. Nurse Svetlana Gildeyeva said mother and baby are doing well and were transferred to a maternity hospital in the nearby city of Baurnal. Weighing in at 17 pounds, one ounce, baby Nadezhda was born via C-section to Tatiana Khalina, 42. She was Khalina’s 12th child.

An average newborn weighs around seven pounds. The largest baby ever born in the United States was 23 pounds, 11 ounces, but died 11 hours after birth; the largest surviving baby was born in Italy at 22 pounds, 8 ounces. Various factors can contribute to higher-weight babies. If a woman is heavy, it is more likely that her child will be too. Diet during pregnancy can play a role as well; pregnancy is not a ticket to disregard healthy diet and exercise habits.
