Alka Seltzer Introduced
February 21, 1931
In the late 1920s, the United States experienced a severe flu epidemic which affected almost half the population. On a visit to the editor-in-chief of a local newspaper, Hub Beardsley, the president of Miles Laboratories, realized that the newspaper staff seemed to be resistant to the flu epidemic. He discovered that they were taking a combination of acetylsalicylic acid and bicarbonate until their cold symptoms disappeared. Beardsley asked chemist Maurice Treneer to develop an effervescent tablet with acetylsalicylic acid and sodium bicarbonate as the main ingredients. The following tests confirmed the versatility and effectiveness of the formula. In short, Alka-Seltzer® was born.
