First Aid for Heart Attack

 
 Symptoms   

  • Chest pain or discomfort that does not get better when the person rests, takes medicine, or changes position.
  • Severe chest pain that lasts more than 10 minutes
  • Pain that spreads from the chest to the jaw, neck, arm, or the area between the shoulder blades.
  • Difficulty breathing: shortness of breath, noisy breathing, or breathing faster than normal.
  • Changes in pulse rate: fast, slow, or irregular.
  • Absence of pulse.
  • Skin is pale, bluish, moist, or sweating.
 
 Immediate Action First Aid   

  1. CALL 911
  2. Convince the person to rest. Help him or her to rest comfortably.
  3. Comfort the person.
  4. Assist the person to take medication as prescribed.
  5. Be prepared to give CPR if the person's heart stops.
 
 Follow-up Care 

Call the doctor if any of these symptoms occur:

  • Chest pain is not relieved by medication
  • Shortness of breath or coughs while at rest
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Bleeding gums or other areas
  • Heart palpitations, or heart skips beats
 
 Future Prevention 

  • Eat a heart-healthy diet.
  • Don't smoke.
  • Talk with your doctor about an exercise program. Exercise regularly.
  • Control diabetes.
