Press hard directly on the wound for 5 to 10 minutes, until you see the bleeding stops. If there is anything in the wound, put pressure around it, not on it. If the wound is gaping, hold its edges together firmly.
Lay the person down and raise the injured part, if possible. This will reduce the flow of blood from the wound.
Put a firm pad on the wound and bind it tightly over the whole wound to keep pressure on the wound. If bandages are not available, use a piece of clean clothing. Do not use a tourniquet. Check for a pulse below the bandage (further from the heart).
If blood oozes through the bandage, DO NOT remove it. Bandage more padding over the wound.
