EDUCATION CENTER: First Aid

First Aid for Electrical Burns

 Symptoms
Electrical burns may look small, but the surface damage is only the tip of the iceberg; deeper tissues may be badly damaged.

 Immediate Action First Aid
  1. If possible, disconnect power by shutting off wall switch, throwing a breaker in the electrical box, or any other safe way.
  2. Do not directly touch the victim if power is still on. Use wood or thick dry cloth (nonconducting material) to pull the victim from power source.
  3. Call 911.
  4. Start CPR if necessary.
  5. DO NOT cool the burn.

 Follow-up Care
Follow doctor's orders.

 Future Prevention

  • Put safety covers on all unused electrical outlets.
