  • Needle Biopsy of the Lung

    Description

Depending on the area to be tested, the patient may be asked to lie on the stomach or back, or sit with his or her arms resting on a table. A local anesthetic is administered to the area where the needle will be inserted. Before inserting the needle, the physician may make a 1/8 inch incision. The needle is inserted into the skin. When it is about to enter the lung tissue, the patient will be asked to hold his or her breath. The doctor extracts a tissue or fluid sample with the needle. At the laboratory, a culture may be used to analyze the sample.
